Beauty Products That Are NOT Worth The Hype {Drugstore Edition!}

Hello, Everyone! I did a post the other day on beauty products that I think are worth the hype. Well, today's blog is a bit more negative as I unintentionally throw a little shade. I don't enjoy negative posts, but I do think it's equally as important to let you know of things I like and things that didn't work out for me. I know that a lot of people really love and enjoy some of the products I will be mentioning in this post, but these are simply things that didn't work for me.
So, let's just jump right in...

Covergirl Lash Blast has a huge colt following that, frankly, I just don't get! I remember when Covergirl launched Lash Blast years ago and I was so eager  to try their new, hot item. I mean, the name of the mascara literally screams awesomeness claiming to provide "instant volume and thickness." I remember thinking "What Volume?! What Thickness?! What a crappy mascara!!!" My lashes are a relativity long so (thankfully) I can make most mascaras work, regardless of the brush, formula, etc.; however, whenever I use this mascara it takes me a good 10-15 minutes just to build it up to where I have the desired volume and intensity. I have repurchased this mascara several times because I really want to like it, but I don't. I have also tried the Fusion kind- the one in the purple tube- and I swear it's the exact same formula in a different color tube! I'll stick Maybelline's Colossal and Almay's Get Up and Grow! Note: If you are wanting to get a CG mascara, I would recommend the Covergirl Professional Super Thick Lash mascara...it's an oldie, but a goodie!

I feel like everyone is obsessed with Essie Nail Polish and even though I do really enjoy a few of their shades- Fuji is probably one of my top favorites!- I think the brand as a whole is pretty hit and miss. For example, Sugar Daddy and Periwinkle are way too sheer and Sugar Daddy takes forever to dry! I mean, Essie's Butter Please takes probably 3 or 4 coats just to be opaque whereas Sally Hansen's Pacific Blue- another favorite!- is opaque in one cost and about $5-6 cheaper, depending on where you buy! I'm not trying to bash Essie because the shades that are opaque in one or two coats are beautiful, but as a whole, I think the brand is way over-hyped for the overall quality of the brand!

I was devastated when Revlon discontinued the previous Colorstay Quads and replaced them with the newer formula- I know, First World Problems. LOL First of all, I feel like the old formula was buttery smooth where the new formula is harder and takes forever to build up the desired intensity and the older formula was easier to blend, too. They new Colorstay Quads have some beautiful shades, but I am just partial to Neutral Khakis, In the Buff, and Sterling Rose- from the older Colorstay line!

Let me first start of my saying that I really do enjoy the pigmentation on these Milani Color Statement Lipsticks, but the scent and taste literally makes me nauseous! When the line was re-released with the new packaging, I picked up Rose Hip- 14 because I thought it looked similar to MAC's Candy Yum Yum. The color has intense pigmentation and doesn't feel too drying on the lips, but that smell...ugh!, that plastic, fake fruity-chemical smell! All the bloggers and vloggers were going nuts over these shades {which are beautiful}, but I don't remember reading any blogs or watching any YouTube beauty videos where anyone talked about the smell. Sure, most all mentioned that there was a scent present, but no one talked about how overwhelmingly vile it was. I figured I might have gotten a bad batch and so I went out and purchased Nude Creme- 26 because I remember how much I loved the shade on EmilyNoel83 from BeautyBroadcast. When I swatched it in the car, it had that same nauseating scent, but the color was too perfect to return it so I gave it to my sister, who rocks the smokey eye and nude lip day or night. I still have Rose Hip and do wear it every now and then during the warmer months, but I always have to brace my self and mentally prepare myself for that smell.

I know that it looks like I am picking on Covergirl by having two products from their brand in my post, but there are products from their line that are staples in my collection: CG quad in Country Woods, CG Single Enhancer Eyeshadow in  Mink (because that is my favorite shade in the Country Woods quad), and CG Outlast Stay Brillant Nail Polish in Perfect Penny. I had such high hopes for the Covergirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 Foundation, yet did nothing for my skin. I tried different application techniques to make this foundation work for me: fingers, brush, sponge, etc. but it never failed that by mid-day my skin would look patchy, like the foundation was breaking down and needed to be re-blended. Sometimes I would go to re-blend during the work day and then my skin would look unnatural and streaky. It really is a shame that this foundation didn't work for me because the color I had was a great match for my skin. Whenever Ross and I were packing things for our move across the country, I gave this foundation away to my sister's friend who is fair like I am. Hopefully it works for her!

  • I made Mexican Stuffed Shells this morning for Ross' dinner/my breakfast and they were delicious!
  • My Maracuja Oil came in today! I am almost out of my Argan Oil and I have been curious to see how the oils I've tried- and it hasn't been many- compare to each other and which I think are worth repurchasing. Let me know if that is something you would be interested in.
  • My sister and I have decided to start a blog together! I will still be blogging on Pretties and Pearls, but I will also be blogging on our joint blog, too. I will let you guys know when it's up and running! #SisterLove

NOTD: Leopard and Oxblood Nails

Hello, Lovelies!

It's been forever since my last NOTD post and I thought since this is such an amazing combo, I just had to share! Oxblood and Leopard are a very popular combo this time of year and I have finally jumped on the bandwagon when it comes to nail art! As we know, I'm a bit of a snooze when it comes to nails...just sticking to one color or on the very rare occasion, a glitter accent nail. I had never used nail strips until tonight and I must say, I'm a big fan! What a simple, quick way to get fabulous nails! I am using Revlon's Limited Edition Parfumerie nail polish in Bordeaux and Kiss Stick-On Strips in the Leopard design. If you are not familiar with this Limited Edition collection by Revlon, the nail polishes are scented once the nail polish dries. I have already worn this one once before and although I adore the fruity-wine notes, I'm not a fan of the longevity. I've read many a blog post and watched numerous YouTube videos and for the most part, people love the staying power. Bordeaux chipped in two days and Italian Leather (the deep green) chipped in less than 12 hours. I'm giving this one another shot to redeem itself- stay tuned for my thoughts!

Where to buy: I picked up two of the LE Revlon polishes at Rite Aid. I think they were $7-8/ea. I took advantage of the BOGO 50% off sale! I picked up the Kiss nail strips from Dollar General. I think it was around $2.

The color is pulling more classic red than oxblood. Trust me, it's a deeper red in real life.

  • I think I'm going to make Spinach Stuffed Shells for Ross' dinner/my breakfast in the morning. #NightShiftLife

NOTD: ColorMates Nail Polish in Little Blue Box

A few days ago, I hauled some nail polish and a lip gloss I picked up at Fred's Dollar Store. This is my favorite of the bunch! In my original post, I described it as a mint green, but the more I look at it, it's definitely a seafoam green!

Fred's Haul and Bargain Alert!

Whenever I got out of class earlier today, I decided to go to one of the three tiny strip mall type areas in Troy. As I was leaving, I decided to walk around in Fred's just to kill a bit more time. Of course, I pranced my happy self over to the beauty section and found some amazing finds! There was a nail polish rack with ColorMates nail polish for a dollar with some great shades! I also spotted a makeup brand that I didn't recognized either called Ion Cosmetics. I must admit, I know nothing about these brands, but for everything I purchased being a buck, I couldn't pass up such a sweet deal! My total (including tax) was $4.36!

ColorMates Nail Polish
L to R: Colormates Nail polish in Butter Me Up, Bahamian Blue, and Little Blue Book.
All have three coats and no top coat.

Butter Me Up: This was the only one that came out patchy. The color is pretty, but I think next time I'll try using white as a base coat. Oh, and it isn't a creme finish and I don't see any microglitter in the polish, but there is a nice sheen with this one.

Bahamian Blue: What a fun color for spring! This is a creme finish and it came out a bit darker than how it looks in the bottle, but it's still very pretty! This is is opaque in two coats, but I dd three so they would all be the same.

Little Blue Box: Okay, I have no idea why ColorMates decided to name this one Little Blue Box...it's clearly a minty-green... with a creme finish! With that being said, it's still just as gorgeous! This one was opaque in two coats, but as I mentioned before, I wanted them to all be the same.

Ion Cosmetics Lipgloss
The shade I picked up is called Dolly.
I just got back from class and shopping and my makeup is a bit worn off...#NoJudging!

Dolly: What a great everyday pinky-neutral. This is very creamy and feels nice on the lips. I love that it isn't goopy and sticky so I don't get the god-awful mummy lips...you know the ones!

Overall Thoughts: I will be buying a back up of the Bahamian Blue and Little Blue Box nail polishes! Talk about pretty colors with great color pay off! I also will be buying a back up of the lipgloss in Dolly and I am thinking about trying more shades!

What are some of your great bargain finds?! (:

NOTD: Maybelline Color Show Chiffon Chic (160)

While I was in Wal-Mart today, I stopped by the nail polish section to pick up a fabulous new shade to go with my fabulous new accessory  my engagement ring! I love the Color Show line from Maybelline. This is my third nail polish from the line and like the others, I'm in love! This is a gorgeous cool girly pink with a touch of purple undertones. This is such a lovely color and will be amazing for Spring/Summer. I know I will be getting tons of use out of it.

NOTD: Salon Perfect Pure Azure (113)

In natural light.
In artificial light.

I have been on a mission the past few months to find the perfect periwinkle nail polish. I bought Essie's Lapiz of Luxury several months back and hated it! The color was so sheer that I needed two or three coats of a natural-nude color as a base and then I still needed three or four coats of the Essie polish. Needless to say, I am done with using Lapiz of Luxury! I was in Wal-Mart last night and noticed there was a new nail polish display that had Salon Perfect; the polishes are $3.98! In scoping out the the isle, I noticed a periwinkle polish and for some reason, I knew it would work for me. When I got home I painted my nails and now I am completely obsessed with the color!

Pure Azure (#113)
This is a true periwinkle (mix of blue and purple) with a creme finish. I used 3 coats, but probably could have gotten away with two.

  • Exciting news: Ross and I are engaged! He asked me on Wedensday and we are so excited about this new chapter! Click Here to see ring pictures and to read about the proposal. Oh, and I am wearing this color in one of the pictures.
  • We are having a cook out today with some of Ross' co-workers and one of my best friends, Jessica, is coming too. She and I have been friends since elementary school and I have seen her in almost a year. Things have been crazy with both of our schedules so I am looking forward to seeing her!
  • I had a dentist appointment yesterday (at a new dentist) and the gave me a free 4 day supply of the Reflection Advanced Tooth Whitening System. I love teeth whitening kits so I might review this for y'all.

Reiview: Sally Hanson Insta-Dri Top Coat

Okay, So I know I was supposed to review this months ago, but classes got crazy last semester and then I forgot! Oops! Anyways, because I've had this top coat I can pretty much tel you anything you want to know about it.

First of all, it is quick drying, as the brand claims, but is only dry to the touch after 30 seconds. I would recommend waiting a full minute to actually do anything with your hands. I still think a minute is still pretty fast, especially for a $4 top coat. It has a shiny top coat, but doesn't deliver the shine I like...I like my nails to be so shiny that they look wet. My one negative thing about this top coat is that it bubbles. I have used this top coat with every polish and brand under the sun and it bubbles like mad...not cute!

Will I Repurchase?
Absolutely not. The price is great, but it isn't a cute look to have bubbles in your polish. This is a definite miss for me.

Julie G Nail Polishes: Fairytale, Julie's Fave, Gelato in Venice and Birthday Suit

About a week or two ago I mentioned in my Rite Aid haul that I picked up a few of the Julie G nail polishes for BOGO half off. This was the first time trying these polishes and I must say, I am impressed. The colors are so beautiful and the color pay off is great, too. As you can tell, I am so over this drab cold weather, so I opted for spring time colors. The colors I choose are Julie's Fave, Fairytale, Gelato in Venice and Birthday Suit. The nail polishes are $3.99 at Rite Aid or can be purchased from Jessie's Girl Cosmetics

The Nail Polishes...
Julie's Fave.
A coral color that can look a bit more orange in the right light.

Fairytale.
White based lilac.

Birthday Suit.
A neutral pale pink with peachy tones.

Gelato in Venice.
A true mint.

Dupes or Similar Colors?
Index and ring are Julie G's Fairytale. Middle and pinky are Sally Hanson's Lacey Lilac. These colors are not dupes by any means. They are in the same color family, but the Sally Hanson one (the darker of the two) is a true lilac and the Julie G one is more of a white based lilac. Please forgive the sloppy painted nails. I was in a hurry, as you can tell. #NoJudging
Index and ring finger are Julie G's Gelato in Venice. Middle and pinky are Sally Hanson's Mint Sorbet. These look exactly the same on the nail. I love a great mint polish and as you can tell, I am in need of a new one because I have worn the Sally Hanson one to death. I will say though, I prefer the formula of the Sally Hanson one over the Julie G one because it last longer and doesn't chip as easily.

Mini Rite Aid Sale Haul! Feb. 2013

Hello, Everyone!
Yesterday I saw on Budget Beautiful's YouTube Sunday Sale Alert that there was a great sale going on at Rite Aid. Click Here to watch her Sunday sale video. As you may have guessed, I love a good deal! So, later that day I went over to Rite Aid and got a few things.  Wet-n-Wild blushes are on sale for $1.79 and the Julie G nail polishes are BOGO half off. My grand total (including tax) was $19.94! Happy Shopping, Everyone and don't forget to check out Budget Beautiful's channel! (:
The Nail Polishes...
I picked up four of Julie G's nail polishes. When I got home I tried the lilac and peachy-coral color and both are so beautiful! I am wearing Fairytale (the lilac color) on my nails and Julie's Fave on my toes. I will be doing a review on these polishes soon.

 Blushers...
I also picked up two Wet-n-Wild blushes and both are (no surprise) crazy pigmented. There are four colors in the color icon blush line and I already had Heather Silk and Pearlescent  Pink. Honestly, I really had no desire getting these, but because they were 40% off, I figured I would give 'em a try. I am wearing Berry Shimmer today and it is so pretty! I lightly tapped my brush in and wiped the excess off on the back of my hand and then applied to my cheeks. I still needed to buff the color out a little because it was way too dark on my fair skin, but the end result was stunning!

Daily Dose of Pretty...

  • It has been raining like mad for the past few days! I am so ready so pretty weather again!
  • I finally finished The Grapes of Wrath this morning! Ah, it was amazing! Hands down, the best book I've read in a while!
  • Ross' mom sent us some Valentine's goodies! Hopefully Ross won't eat all of the puppy chow before I can get some. Lol

NOTD: Salon Perfect Snow Flurry

Can y'all tell I've been really into nail polish lately? I've seriously posted like 3 or 4 NOTDs pretty much back to back.

I was in Wal-Mart today picking up a few things and noticed that there was a random nail polish box in the cosmetics department. I stumbled across some Salon Perfect nail polishes in there for $3.98! My Wal-Mart doesn't have a Salon Perfect display so maybe it's a random fluke it was there. Anyways, this gorgeous icy, pearly white nail polish caught my eye...there were some other colors too, but none that tickled my fancy like this one! As I've mentioned, I love a good neutral, but I am typically not into white polishes. I am very pale so white or white-based polishes just look odd, like there isn't any contrast between my skin tone and the color of the polish. Anyways, this color is amazing and I wish I would have seen it a while ago. I looked it up online and found out that this was Limited Edition for the winter so hopefully you can still get your hands on it. This polish was opaque in two coats, but I did three, just in case. Overall, I really like this color and the formula, but I am not a fan of the brush. It looks like a traditional brush but it seemed like the base of the brush was too thin and the bottom was a little thicker so it felt weird while applying.

Three Coats (no top coat)

Daily Dose of Pretty...
  • I am over the moon thrilled that the Ravens won the Super Bowl last night. I went to school with Courtney Upshaw and he is the nicest guy you'll ever meet. So, that's two pros from Eufaula, AL that have gone to the Super Bowl and won. #EufaulaPride
  • I am half way finished with The Grapes of Wrath. I am so in love with the book and the characters. So glad we are having to read such an incredible American classic.
  • Today starts day one of my diet. Well, it's not really a diet. Ross and I have just decided to make better choices when it comes to food. I will admit, though, I'd love some french fries about right now. Lol

NOTD: Hard Candy Beetle

Seriously, where has this color been all my life?!
Truth be told, I am pretty boring with my nail polish selections. I love a good neutral and not-too-crazy-colors, but when I saw this nail polish by Hard Candy, I just knew I had to have it! This is a duo-chrome polish with pinky-purple and green. There seems to be a bit of gold in the mix, too, but I think that's more of a golden-ish sheen. The formula can be tricky to work with- can get a little patchy on the first two coats- but I think the final result is totally worth it! This nail polish is an exact dupe of Orly's Space Cadet and MAC's Mean & Green! Whoohoo for a good deal! Click here to see how Beetle compares to Space Cadet. Click here see how Space Cadet compares to Mean & Green. I don't own the Orly nor the MAC ones, but I've seen many pictures online and I can't tell them apart. As far as Orly and MAC's formula, I can't say if they're easier to work with or not because I don't own them, but I don't mind applying an extra coat of Bettle to even everything out. In comparing the prices, the Hard Candy one is $4 at Wal-Mart and I've seen the Orly one at CVS for around $8 or 9. Because this is a "sometimes" color, I prefer the $4 or 5 dollar savings.

Tip:
I found that allowing this polish to completely dry makes for a better finish. The first time I applied, I allowed it to partially dry before adding on more coats, then applied my Sally Hanson Quick Dry Top Coat. The top coat is supposed to make nails dry after 30 seconds. I like to wait a complete minute or so before doing anything, though. For some reason, the Sally Hanson top coat didn't make this nail polish dry in the 30 seconds...maybe it's the formula of this duo-chrome polish?! Even after several minutes of allowing it to try, I got smudges and had to completely start over.
Also, I found that I could get away with three coats if my nails were shorter, but when I stepped outside in natural light, my tips were a bit sheer so I needed a fourth coat.

Let's see the progress...
One Coat.

Two Coats.

Three Coats.

Four Coats (with top coat).

UPDATE on Feb. 4, 2013: This nail polish is a bitch to remove! Save your sanity and use the foil method...makes it much easier! Click here to watch a tutorial using the foil method.

  • Ross and I have had a study date all afternoon. I've been reading The Grapes of Wrath for my Western Lit. class and he's been getting some work done. Life of a college student! Come on, May! (:
  • We're going to look at rings (again) this afternoon. I've decided on a setting, but I'm still trying to decide on the center stone. The setting is a solitaire with side sides down the pave and I'm thinking either a round, cushion or oval as the center stone!
  • I can't wait until Drew Barrymore Flower line comes to my Wal-Mart! I think EmilyNoel83 (from BeautyBroadcast) has a Review coming up tomorrow! I will be watching to get a peek at the new line's beauty goodies!

NOTD/Review: NYC Water Street Blue

Can y'all tell I am ready for summer?
Yesterday was a beautiful, warm day in Alabama and it's been nice outside today, too. So, I've decided to bring a little spring/summer color in my life! I love NYC'S nail polish in Water Street Blue, #296. I wore this color so many times last year and I'm sure I will be doing the same this year.

About the color...

  • It's very blue. I wouldn't call it a neon, but it is a bright color that will get noticed.
  • Opaque in two coats.
  • I really like the formula. It's not too thick, not too thin.
  • As the name implies, it is a quick drying formula.
  • The brush is a good size...not too large, not too small.

Overall thoughts...
I really like this nail polish. It's less than $2 at Wal-Mart (prices may vary by location) and is too gorgeous to pass up!

Daily Dose of Pretty...
  • I don't have class today- woohoo!- but I have to read the first 10 chapters of Grapes of Wrath by tomorrow so I will be a busy little bee today!
  • I bought Hard Candy's Beetle yesterday and it is gorgeous! I've seen online that it's a dupe for Orly Space Cadet, which I have been wanting but refuse to spend $10 on a "sometimes" color.
  • I have been obsessed with Revlon's Coralberry. I got it yesterday, too, and I have to say, I'm in love! I am wearing it today!

NOTD: Classic Red with Accent Nail

Can you tell I'm ready for Valentine's Day?
I bought this Milani polish before Christmas for an amazing price at CVS...it was on clearance for less than $3- What a deal! I really wanted to do something festive for the month of love and red is such a classic color.

I love the Rimmel Lasting Finish Pro polish in 375 Stiletto Red- cute name, right?! The formula is very creamy and dries relatively quickly. As I mentioned before, longevity isn't a big deal to me because I change my polish every few days, but I have wore this for about 4 days with little to no chipping.
Used two coats with top coat.

Milani's One Coat Glitter in 521 Red Sparkle is gorgeous! I've been on the hunt for a fun glitter polish and this one is lovely. I don't think you can get away with one coat, as the brand claims, but two coats does the trick! This formula dries pretty quick, so you may need to work fast.
Used two coats with top coat.
I like this nail look. I need to get a heart stencil because I think it would have been so cute to do two accents nails. One glitter and one gold heart on my index finger. Maybe I'll post that another time!

Glitter is a bitch to remove so use the foil method. Click here to see a tutorial of the foil method.

Daily Dose of Pretty...

  • I had my first test of my last semester! I am pretty sure I made an A! woohoo!
  • I had a lovely conversation with my sister tonight! So glad when we get a chance to chat!
  • I gave blood today and ate my weight in Chinese food after to regain my strength...or at least that was the excuse I gave myself!

Review: Milani Purple Gleam & Sale Alert

Just a heads up, CVS is having a clearance sale...50-75% select items! I saw the sale on Nouveau Cheap's blog. The link will be below. You might want to scan the sale items before you check out because some of the sale items on the list were not on sale at my CVS.

I ended up buying four Milani nail polishes, the Revlon Colorstay concealer in light and a backup of my favorite light, Wet-n-Wild's single shadow in Brulee. I got all this for $9.06 with $22.93 in savings.

Whenever I got home I decided to try Milani's One Coat Glitter in Purple Gleam. I have been obsessed with purples lately, literally cannot get enough!

    The polish...
    One Coat.
I really wanted to put this polish to the test since it's called one coat. On my index and ring finger I'm only wearing one coat of the glitter polish. On my middle and pinky finger I'm wearing Wet-n-Wild's Disturbia (a deep purple) as a base and one coat of Purple Gleam, Honestly, one coat of Purple Gleam alone doesn't cut it for me. I do, however, like the purple base with the glitter over it. Hopefully it will be easier to get off because there isn't as much glitter on that nail.

    Two Coats.
I have two coats on all the nails and I think they all look the same. In the future, I will use the Disturbia as a base and only one coat of the glitter polish because I don't think it makes that big of a difference and I don't have an extra layer of glitter to get off.

    Overall Thoughts...
I think this is a beautiful true purple glitter polish. Obviously the one coat claim isn't entirely true, but with either a base coat or two glitter coats, it's just perfect. I do reccommend this polish to anyone wanting to try it. It's gorgeous on the nails...and it's only $1.25 at CVS right now!

Glitter is tough to remove so use the foil method to remove this (or other glitter) polishes.

    Daily Dose of Pretty...
    • I am overly excited about my wonderful deals from CVS!
    • Ross' Christmas present came in today and the nail polish I ordered for myself came in too. What a pleasant surprise since it came a few days early!
    • I had a study session with a friend from class and I feel a little bit better about our final tomorrow. We met at Starbucks and I had the Gingerbread Latte (which is delicious), but since I don't drink things with caffeine, I'm a bit jittery. Lol

Nail of the Day: Maybelline Sequins in 280 Sea-Quins

This is my first time trying Maybelline's Color Show line. I've seen a few colors in their permanent line that were pretty, but none that I had to have. Today, I was in Wal-Mart and saw the color Sea-Quins #820 from their Limited Edition Collection. This collection has been out for a while now, but this is the first time I saw this particular color. There are eight colors in the entire Sequins collection, but this is the only one that stood out to me. I believe I paid less than $3 for this at Wal-Mart- what a steal! (:
I wish I wouldn't have been so late on the bandwagon to try this line's nail polish because this one is great! I will be purchasing more from the Color Show line!

The polish is opaque in 2 coats. Even with a top coat, the glitter still feels rough and doesn't give the shinny finish I would like. Overall, I didn't have any problems with this color and formula. The color is an absolutely gorgeous teal glitter with some sapphire glitter bits in the polish. I paired this polish with Hard Candy's Mr. Right, a basic navy.

Use the foil method to remove stubborn glitter.

    Daily Dose of Pretty...
    • I am obsessed with this nail polish and will be getting a lot of use of it...thinking about buying a back-up.
    • I took my first final yesterday. It was in Physical Anthropology and I got a 100 on the final and ended up with an A in the class. (:
